Over the past year, alongside my colleagues Rebecca Thomas and Paul Bennet, I’ve been part of an exciting transformation at the University of Hertfordshire. Together, we’ve revalidated the existing media degree into a brand-new, industry-facing photography programme—one that reflects the real world students are graduating into.
The new degree is unapologetically contemporary. It merges creative exploration with professional practice, giving students the tools, insight, and experience they need to thrive in today’s fast-moving visual industries. From editorial storytelling and fashion campaigns to art-based practice and digital innovation, the course is designed to be flexible, responsive, and rooted in the demands of the sector.

Rebuilding a course from the ground up is no small task, but the result is something we’re all incredibly proud of. It’s more than a curriculum shift—it’s a statement of intent. Photography matters, and this new programme puts it right where it belongs: at the intersection of culture, creativity, and career.
