I’ve just started my new role with Mildenhall Council, and one part of the job I’m particularly excited about is developing the education offering at Mildenhall Museum.

At the moment, there’s no formal link between local schools and the museum—and that’s something I’m keen to change. Mildenhall has a fantastic local history collection, from Roman treasure to Anglo-Saxon artefacts, and yet most schoolchildren in the area have never stepped inside. That’s a missed opportunity—not just for learning, but for sparking curiosity and pride in local heritage.

My aim is simple: to design engaging, accessible programmes that make the museum feel alive and relevant for students. I want children to connect with the past not through textbooks, but through real objects, hands-on activities, and storytelling that brings the exhibits off the shelves and into their imagination.

Over the coming months, I’ll be reaching out to schools to understand what they need, and working with the museum team to build workshops, visits, and classroom resources that support curriculum goals while offering something unique and memorable.

This is just one part of my wider role, but it’s one I feel particularly passionate about. A museum shouldn’t be a quiet space full of glass cases—it should be part of the community. I’m looking forward to opening that door for the next generation of learners in Mildenhall.

If you're a local teacher or educator and want to be involved, please get in touch—I’d love to hear your ideas.
